This guide provides the general tips for each exercise in the main manual, including sample data, logistical recommendations on how to organize the students or use class time, a difficulty rating scale, and even product guidelines for items not commonly found in high school labs. Few assumptions are made about what the instructor should already know or already have.

Antonio Chaves graduated from the University of Maryland in 1982 with a B.S. in fish and wildlife. After serving two years in the Peace Corps, he stayed in Ecuador to work in the shrimp-farming industry. Eventually, he made his way back to college and earned a Ph.D. in zoology at Texas A&M University in 1999. Dr. Chaves currently teaches biology, chemistry, and environmental science in the Washington D.C. area, and uses his spare time to write articles on science and education policy.
